  • Our Adult Ballet Classes are taught by Miss Cecily, and are suitable for all who wish to continue taking ballet class to realize all the benefits in their daily lives.

In addition, we have developed a very successful program for adults who wish to begin learning ballet, from the beginning. Often this is in response to their inner urge to Live Their Dream. We respect and encourage that fabulous desire and have helped a significant number of Tucson's Adult dancers begin to Live Their Dream, and you can Live YOUR Dream!!! Our focus on Adult Beginning Ballet Dancers has led us to provide a number of classes, that are basically workshops, for adults who wish to learn ballet. Miss Jan's Beginning Ballet Classes during the Fall and Winter semesters are Thursday @ 6 PM; Sat @ 1 PM; Sunday @ 1 PM. Spread the news...

Our adult ballet dancers, beginners and more advanced dancers all performed beautifully in Arizona Ballet Theatre's "International Language of Dance 2012" performances at The University of Arizona's Stevie Eller Dance Theatre last June. DVDs of ABT's Dress Rehearsal and both Performance are available in the Lobby. Feel free to drop by to observe a class.

I want to emphasize that we specialize in providing Ballet Instruction For Adults at our Arizona Ballet Theatre Studios in Tucson. We have Adult Ballet Morning Classes all summer, and all year around. Many of our adult dancers have taken class with us regularly for years. If you have questions call. Or, better yet, just Click here to send Miss Cecily an instant email. Or, just show up and observe. Better yet, simply come take a class. Miss Cecily will place you in the proper class if the one you took was too hard or too easy for you. Also she will quickly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and how she can get you, very quickly, to be a performer, or at least to look your very best offstage and be happy. We are all very friendly, and nurturing, so don't hesitate. The butterflies in your stomach will soon be happily dancing with the class as well ;)

Part of our mission is to enhance awareness in Tucson that Ballet is great exercise for mature adults who have never danced before, as well as for the chronologically young. It is valuable for toning the body's muscles and muscle groups. In addition it is a great aerobic exercise, and that is extremely important for cardiovascular fitness. It keeps the body and spirit youthful.

Whether you just want to maintain a level of fitness doing what you love and dream about rather than boring exercises, or were a member of a Company years ago, we will happily welcome you and work with you and integrate you into our fun classes...

Our classes are fun, with challenging and delightful choreography. I give lots of individual attention to my dancers. I am quite motivational.

My dancers make rapid progress. In order to promote safety, promote proper focus and centering, we do suitable warming up and strengthening exercises at the barre.

So much has happened recently. Pointe has been in the air :)) I have been talking about Pointe Shoes this week. . . About my audition for the Royal Ballet with E. Virginia Williams. Cecily was En Pointe - Wounded but still En Pointe. . . And about new dancers going En Pointe...

A number of adults have asked recently about fulfilling their dream of wearing pointe shoes and going en pointe. It is fulfilling to see so many of my Adult Ballet Dancers wearing Pointe Shoes at my Monday and Friday Morning Adult Ballet Mini-Pointe Class. Living Your Dream is a wonderful thing. It's exciting that so many dancers can do it at ABT. Point shoes, used properly, with a good teacher who is receptive, empathetic, knowledgeable, and effective, can go a long way to helping a dancer improve her feet and her dancing. It is fun to see an Adult Dancer grow, succeed and Live Her Dream :) :) :)

A number of adult dancers have said I am the best teacher they have ever had. I can give you references to those dancers. Better yet, come in and take a class, and talk to some of them. Or, if you prefer, come in and observe. We welcome observers at our classes. After all, ballet is a performing art, for beginning ballet dancers as well as for advanced levels.

Emily Heil, a well known Washington D.C. reporter, and television personality, discusses why she, a successful career woman, takes ballet classes, and how wonderful it makes her feel. It's in an article in the Washington Post titled "Take a Ballet Class."

The colorful title above, is a reminder that Arizona Ballet Theatre of Tucson has Adult Ballet Classes in the morning to start the Tucson day. In the summer time too. It's great fun and a stimulating activity to focus the mind and exercise the body, before going to work or after dropping the kids at school or camp. Our ABT morning ballet classes are lively and fun with sensational choreography (;-). They are intended to excite and challenge while still being loads of fun. It's quite a workout and excellent aerobic exercise.

Why not start your day the ABT Ballet workout way. Check our schedule on this site, and come by to watch or join our fun class, and live your dream with the rest of us! We do have Mini-Point classes in addition.

I should add that in view of the 80 year old male ballet dancer in England, who started classes ten years ago, we will happily accept men who would like to be challenged athletically without engaging in an organized sport.

    Shot from TV screen?

Like many little girls, I once dreamed of dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in "The Nutcracker." I would watch the videotape endlessly on my family's clunky VCR (even then, I had an inkling that Baryshnikov was a fox), pirouetting along with the on-screen dancers. As I narrowly avoided knocking over Mom's best crystal vase with a thrashing arm, I felt beautiful, weightless and graceful.

Now I'm a career woman in pumps, not satin slippers -- but I haven't abandoned my prima ballerina dreams. Dancing is a great exercise option for gym-aphobes like me. Better posture, toned muscles (especially in the derriere) and increased flexibility are ballet boons. Plus, the discipline and mental focus needed to get through a 90-minute class put real-world cares at bay: just try mentally constructing a grocery list while whipping off a series of grand battements (high kicks).

Many adults who loved ballet as youngsters shy away as adults, complaining that they're not as flexible, not as thin, not as quick on their feet as they were when they last donned a leotard. Okay, so maybe I don't have the noodle-like flexibility of that kid dancing with Misha. But once in a great while, amid the sweat and effort of a ballet class, I feel like her for a second.

What to Expect: Call ahead to determine what level you're ready for -- studios often have very different ideas about what "beginner" means. Classes begin at the barre (long horizontal rails, usually affixed to the walls) as students follow the teacher through a series of arm-and-leg movements. After muscles have warmed up, class moves to the center. The first set of steps, or a "combination" in ballet lingo, is usually slow. Center work gets increasingly fast-paced, moving to quicker footwork and ending with big jumps or leaps. In the right class, you should be able to keep up with the instruction and the other students without feeling lost. Expect sore muscles after almost every class -- especially if you're taking up ballet for the first time or after a long absence.

What to Bring: Although it's tempting to hide from the floor-to-ceiling mirrors under baggy sweats, form-fitting clothes allow teachers to see and correct mistakes like bent knees or sloping posture. Long hair should be tucked back, and ballet slippers are a must.
